Some people love games, food, or travel. I love cranes. To be honest, I think of a new design for a crazy crane at least once a month. This was the big one. I needed a gantry crane to lift my motorcycle for construction, so I designed and built a collapsible, 1 ton gantry crane.
When my company, Mantis Composites, needed to move into the second floor of the warehouse, we had a problem. CNC machines and stairs don't mix well. In order to remedy this problem, I got to build another crane! This one is two stage, up and in. The hook engages a second latch that pulls the load in from the side. An electric drill powers a hand winch that can pull up to 250lbs. Believe it or not, two drill batteries moved the entire business upstairs!
This is the first time I managed to build something to lift any significant amount of weight. The weight was myself (I was about as heavy as a sand bag) and the system held. Use? Not much… Rope burns? Plentiful.
